Thanks to a very generous gift from alumnus Bruce McWilliams (S '78, '78, '81), an endowed fund has been established to provide fellowships to graduate students in the Mellon College of Science studying in an area where Carnegie Mellon has a comparative advantage and where research is at an emerging or critical stage. This fellowship will initially focus on students doing research in the areas of nanotechnology, biophysics or cosmology, with the donors' strong preference for supporting chemistry or physics students.

The Lederman Fellowship was created by Frank and Daphna Lederman in 2025 and assists a graduate student in their research. It provides partial funding for tuition and a stipend for an academic year.

Frank Lederman graduated from Carnegie Mellon in 1971 with his bachelor’s degree in mathematics and a master’s degree in physics.

After earning his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Illinois in 1975, Frank Lederman began a distinguished career in industry focused on advancing applied science and technology. He is best known for leading the development of General Electric’s first medical ultrasound system, a breakthrough that significantly advanced the field of medical imaging.

He received the Alumni Achievement (Merit) Award from the CMU Alumni Association in 1998.

Daphna Lederman studied fine art and graphic design in Jerusalem. She is an active volunteer, dedicating her time to desert landscaping, invasive grass management and cactus rescue efforts.
